Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for placing and fixing reinforcement materials
   • Access, interpret and apply reinforcement materials documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify, obtain and implement traffic signage/barricade requirements
   • Select, and check for faults, equipment/tools for work activities
   • Check stock of required reinforcement materials
   • Identify and apply environmental protection requirements
   • Select and wear correct personal protective equipment
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Reinforcement preparation
   • Check formwork for completion and conformity to receive reinforcement
   • Cut and bend reinforcement bars to required set out and plans/specifications
   • Tie bars to designed configuration
   • Cut reinforcement sheets to required sizes
   • Attach stiffening rods to panels as required to facilitate handling processes
   • Locate bar chairs/spacers to requirements of reinforcement schedule and plans/specifications
3. Place and fix reinforcement
   • Place fabric reinforcement sheets into position in accordance with engineer’s drawings and specifications
   • Locate and position reinforcement bars
   • Locate and place reinforcement using bar chairs, ligatures and spacers
   • Ensure reinforcement material is supported and secured into position
   • Secure cast-in items to reinforcement
   • Cover and protect ends of protruding reinforcement material
4. Check reinforcement prior to concrete pour
   • Check location and position of reinforcement and fixing ties to reinforcement for accuracy
   • Check depth of coverage, clearance, spacing and overlap of reinforcement material in accordance with engineer’s drawings/job specifications
5. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Manage/report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
   • Process written records

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of the placing and fixing of reinforcement materials including:

selecting and using relevant tools and equipment

completing formwork

completing concreting

checking stock of reinforcement materials for correct type and quantity against reinforcement schedule and details in plans/specifications

communicating effectively to clarify instructions/information

completion of housekeeping activities

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the placing and fixing reinforcement materials in a way that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

demonstrates completion of placing and fixing reinforcement materials that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

completing the placement and fixing of reinforcement materials to specification on different jobs and involving deformed bars, rods and mesh sheets

using JSA’s/JSEA/Safe work methods

site isolation and traffic control

planning and organising work activities

working with civil construction terminology

reading and interpreting engineering drawings

identifying steel reinforcement characteristics

identifying concrete characteristics and properties

using structural technology

using construction principles

identifying equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

using safety data sheet and materials handling methods

carrying out operational, maintenance and basic diagnostic procedures
